How energetic blocks affect our chakras
In energy healing, the chakras are understood as centres of energy, each connected to different parts of our inner and outer lives. When energy is blocked in one area, it may affect how we feel, how we relate to others, life events, and how easily we move forward.
The chakras are connected, so a block in one area can affect the others too. Here are some ways energetic blocks may show up.
The Root Chakra
Safety, stability and security
The root chakra is connected to feeling safe, grounded and supported. It relates to our sense of stability, belonging and having a secure foundation in life, including how safe and supported we feel around money and our basic needs.
When energy here feels blocked, you may experience fear, insecurity or difficulty trusting that life will support you. You might worry about not having enough money, struggle to feel financially secure, or feel unsettled even when things are going well. It can also show up as a constant need to control what happens next, difficulty staying present, or feeling disconnected from your body and surroundings.
These blocks may affect your sense of belonging and your ability to feel at home in yourself. When the root chakra feels supported, it can be easier to feel grounded in the present, trust your ability to meet life’s challenges and build a greater sense of stability and security.
The Sacral Chakra
Emotions, relationships and abundance
The sacral chakra, is associated with emotions, pleasure, creativity, sensuality, sexuality, desire and our ability to connect with others. It relates to how we feel, what we desire, how we experience pleasure and how we connect intimately with ourselves and others. Sexual energy is one expression of our creative life force.
Creativity and sexuality: When this area feels blocked, it may be harder to enjoy life, express emotions or feel at ease in your body. Shame, fear or old wounds around sexuality can make it difficult to understand what you want, express your boundaries or receive pleasure. Some people feel disconnected from their sexuality; others may seek validation through sex or repeat patterns that don’t feel right for them.
A balanced sacral chakra is not about how much sex you have or how strong your desire is. It is about feeling connected to yourself, making your own choices, respecting your boundaries and experiencing intimacy in a way that feels safe and true for you.
Relationships: The sacral chakra is connected to how we relate to others and how we give and receive. Blocks here may make it difficult to build healthy relationships, express how we feel or stay connected to our own needs. They may show up as overgiving or unhealthy attachments. When we feel disconnected from our needs and worth, it can also be harder to receive love, support and abundance.
Addictions and avoiding difficult feelings: addictive patterns may be connected to using certain behaviours to avoid or soothe difficult feelings. This might include substances, sex or other ways of seeking temporary relief or pleasure. The pattern can leave us feeling further disconnected from what we need and feel.
Working with this area can mean becoming more aware of the feelings beneath a behaviour and reconnecting with your needs, choices and ability to experience pleasure in a way that feels healthy for you.
The Solar Plexus
Confidence and personal power
The solar plexus is connected to confidence, self-worth and the ability to make choices. It influences how comfortable we feel taking up space, speaking in front of others and letting ourselves be seen.
When this area feels blocked, you may hold back your opinions, worry about being judged or feel uncomfortable when attention is on you. You might make yourself smaller so others feel comfortable, even when you have something valuable to say or share. It can be hard to shine your light or trust that you have the right to be in the room.
These blocks may also show up as people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries or relying on other people to decide what is right for you. You may feel that you have to prove your worth or earn approval before you can feel confident.
When your solar plexus feels supported, you can make choices with greater trust in yourself, speak up when it matters and let yourself be visible without feeling that you need to apologise for who you are.
The Heart Chakra
Love, compassion and connection
The heart chakra is connected to love, compassion, trust and connection. It influences how we relate to ourselves and others, and how open we feel to joy, gratitude and love.
When energy here feels blocked, it may be harder to open up, give and receive love, or feel close to others. You may protect yourself from being hurt, give more than you receive, or struggle to believe you are worthy of love. It can also be difficult to care for yourself, listen to your own needs or accept care from others.
Blocks in the heart may make it harder to feel joy, compassion and understanding. Unresolved hurt can show up as anger, jealousy, resentment or mistrust. These feelings don’t mean there is something wrong with you; they may point to pain or protection that is ready to be understood and released.
Heart wounds can also affect the relationships we choose or stay in. You may find yourself drawn to people who are emotionally unavailable, controlling or self-centred, or find it difficult to set boundaries with them. This doesn’t mean you caused their behaviour. It may mean that old patterns make unhealthy dynamics feel familiar or make it harder to recognise what you need and deserve.
For me, the heart is also deeply connected to abundance. When we are open to love, gratitude and receiving, we can become more available to the good that life has to offer, in relationships, work, money and everyday experiences. The heart influences so much of how we meet life.
The Throat Chakra
Expression and truth
The throat chakra is connected to communication and self-expression. It supports our ability to speak honestly, express what we think and feel, ask for what we need and share our ideas.
When this area feels blocked, you may hold back your words to avoid conflict or keep the peace. You might find it hard to say no, set a boundary or tell someone how their actions affect you. You may worry about being misunderstood or judged, or feel that your voice does not matter.
Blocks here can also make it difficult to express yourself creatively or show others who you really are. You may silence your own needs, agree when you don’t mean it, or struggle to put your feelings into words.
When your throat chakra feels supported, you can express yourself clearly and honestly, while still listening to others and speaking with care.
The Ear Chakras
Listening and the messages we absorb
The ear chakras are connected to what we hear and take in. Words, sounds and information can leave an energetic impression, especially when we hear them repeatedly or during childhood.
Critical words, frightening messages and negative beliefs about ourselves may stay with us and become part of our inner dialogue. Over time, we may repeat those messages to ourselves as negative self-talk, even when the people who first said them are no longer around.
Blocks here may show up as being very affected by criticism, replaying hurtful words, struggling to quiet negative self-talk or finding it difficult to trust your own inner voice. Becoming aware of what you listen to, and the messages you repeat to yourself, can help you reconnect with your own perspective and let go of old words that no longer serve you.
In an energy healing, clearing the ear chakras is intended to release old impressions from what you have heard, so you can hear your own inner voice more clearly and take in information without carrying old negative messages.
The Third Eye Chakra
Insight and perception
The third eye is connected to intuition, perspective and inner clarity. It influences how we understand ourselves, other people and the world around us.
When this area feels blocked, you may experience confusion, overthinking or difficulty trusting your own judgement. Fear and old beliefs can cloud your perception, making it harder to recognise red flags or trust what you sense about someone. You may find yourself repeating relationships with people who feel toxic or unhealthy. This does not mean you cause their behaviour; blocks may make it harder to see the pattern or act on what you notice.
An open third eye is associated with perception beyond the physical senses, including sensing spirits and the metaphysical world. It may also make you more sensitive to the energy around other people, how they feel to you, and whether their presence feels supportive, unsettling or heavy. This sensitivity can include difficult or negative impressions as well as positive ones.
When your third eye feels clear and balanced, you may find it easier to trust your inner guidance, see patterns and use discernment in how you interpret what you perceive.
The Crown Chakra
Connection to higher consciousness and the divine
The crown chakra is connected to meaning, purpose and spiritual connection. When it feels blocked, you may feel disconnected, lost or unsure of your place in life. It can also be harder to meditate, quiet your mind or feel connected to your higher self and something greater than yourself.
You may find it difficult to access higher states of consciousness, trust your spiritual connection or feel open to messages from the divine. Energy healing can help create a sense of openness and support you in connecting with your higher self and spiritual awareness. Each person’s experience is different.
Energetic blocks can form around old wounds, painful experiences and beliefs we have carried for a long time. They can affect more than one chakra, influencing how we feel, what we believe is possible and the patterns we repeat.
As we begin to release what is ready to shift, we may feel more grounded, connected and open to life.
